Matthew 7, Jesus talks about building a house. In fact, He says “building your house.” You have choices in how you build your house. There are 3 constants in the story in this passage: rain, flood, and wind. No matter how you build your house, these things are going to come. There is no avoiding hard times on this side of Heaven. The choice comes down to this: what is your house built on?
So many people are building their lives on what they know, what they think is right, and the perspective that they have. They are building their life on the ability to know and to figure out what to do. (Their “truth”.) The problem with that is that they don’t know everything, can’t see the future, and the truth based on the world’s view of life continues to change. People try to be the master of their destiny, and it always ends poorly.
Over the last 40 years of ministry, I have watched so many people build their life, family, career, and future on the ways of the world and what they thought was best. The rains came, floods rose, and winds blew, and the life, family, etcetera, they had built on a faulty foundation ended up falling. “And great was its fall.” (Matthew 7:27)
Jesus said that if we build our lives on His Word, His ways, and His heart, then we are building on a rock that is bigger than we are. Building your life on Him puts you in a position to trust the Truth, not some idea you think is right. His truth stands the test of time. His ways are always going to stand. Building your life, your family, your future on Him makes you WISE. Recognizing that there is a God who loves us and gives us His ways and truth because He loves us helps us to stand and build on something bigger than ourselves and our obligations. Because the rains are coming. The floods and winds are coming. And if your house is built on the rock, it will not fall.
What are you building on?
“Hear my cry, O God; Attend to my prayer. From the end of the earth I will cry to You, When my heart is overwhelmed; Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” (Psalm 61:1-2 NKJV)
