I can’t remember when it wasn’t a part of my life. It seems that it always lurked somewhere in the shadowy recesses of my mind. I often tried to escape it by submersing myself in books and in writing, but it always seemed to come creeping back. Fear. It’s always been there, hanging around and trying to steal any sense of joy or peace that I might have or ever hope to gain. Where did it come from and how did it become a part of my life?

For so many years, fear was a constant part of my life. I allowed fear to take over every facet of my being. Every decision that I made was first filtered through fear. Every step I took was controlled by fear. I would not do anything, would not speak out, and couldn’t even face life or people in a healthy way without first checking in on fear. Fear of what? Fear of failure? Fear of never measuring up? Fear of never being enough. Fear had me totally disabled.

This is where Godfidence stepped in. Godfidence is like confidence but better. The definition of confidence is as follows: “a feeling of self-assurance arising from one’s appreciation of one’s own abilities or qualities.” Well, that’s great, but we all know that it doesn’t take much to shatter one’s confidence in themselves or in their own abilities. You see, the problem with confidence is that it is easily shattered at times as our confidence is often contingent upon how we view our performance or how others view us. Instead, I want you to consider Godfidence, which is something totally different! Godfidence, as found in Philippians 1:6 (ESV). “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” It is a confidence in God’s abilities that He has placed in us and works in us from receiving what Jesus has done on the cross though the shedding of His blood at Calvary. Godfidence is when we know that He has placed in us every good work and all we have to do is be willing to access it and stand on it. Godfidence comes when we believe what His word says about us to be true and then to walk according to that revelation.

Godfidence is so much better than having confidence. Fear can easily step in when we focus all our attention on having confidence in our own abilities. Godfidence overrides fear when our trust is placed in the abilities that God has given us—abilities that He promised to become fully realized when we place our trust in Him and what He has done for us on the cross.

Through many different God-friends, Life Groups, God interventions, and the Holy Spirit of God, I am slowly but surely overcoming fear. Each day is a brand new day with new steps to be taken, totally casting all of my cares upon the One who cares for me. Although that old serpent tries to take me back to the place of being incapacitated, I am learning to walk in a place of freedom instead of a place of fear through prayer, Bible study, worship, and constantly connecting with my Father.

Personal note: Thanks goes out to all of my sisters in Christ who are a constant reminder that perfect love casts out fear. You each have been such an integral part of my healing and growth. (You know who you are!) I love you all.
