Living with honesty, transparency, and wholehearted faith. Stop performing. Start becoming who God created you to be. Every person faces the temptation to hide behind a mask—the image we want others to see. But freedom begins when we stop performing and become the people God has destined us to be. Here are three courageous steps toward a life of authenticity.

01  BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF

Authenticity begins with the courage to tell yourself the truth. Ignoring sin or pretending everything is fine will never produce the person God is calling you to become. Honesty may be uncomfortable, but it is the doorway to real change.

Pause and reflect: God cannot heal what you refuse to reveal.

02  BE TRANSPARENT WITH OTHERS

Transparency means allowing trusted people to see the real you—faults and all. It can feel risky, but it opens the door to freedom, meaningful connection, and deeper dependence on God. God calls us into the light because He loves us and desires what is best for us.

Ephesians 5:8–14 (NIV)

8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10 and find out what pleases the Lord. 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, 14 for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said:

“Wake up, O sleeper,

rise from the dead,

and Christ will shine on you.”

03  BE HONEST WITH GOD

Come to God without pretending. Admit how deeply you need Him—every day and in every area of your life.

Hebrews 10:22 (NIV)

22let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.

God invites you to come with a sincere heart. You do not have to clean up your life before approaching Him. He receives you as you are—and transforms you from the inside out. There is no need to hide from the One who already knows you completely.

What does “sincere” look like? The word has often been connected with the idea of being “without wax.” Ancient craftsmen could conceal cracks in pottery with wax, creating the appearance of wholeness. A sincere life has no cosmetic cover-up—no cracks disguised and no mask protecting an image.

Psalm 139:1–8 (NIV)

1O LORD, you have searched me and you know me. 2 You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. 3 You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. 4 Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD. 5 You hem me in—behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain. 7 Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? 8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.

DISCUSSION: SEE THE BIG PICTURE

MASKS & HYPOCRISY

1. We’re all hypocritical from time to time. Why is it so tempting to act this way?

2. What can we gain from acting hypocritically?

3. What advice would you give to someone who’s struggling with being hypocritical?

HONESTY & TRANSPARENCY

1. Why do you think so many people believe they have to clean up their lives before God will accept them?

2. Do you think it’s possible to be sincere and still be wrong?

3. Why is it so difficult to allow people to see who we really are?

4. What’s the risk of being transparent with people?

5. When was there a time you felt that someone judged you simply by what they saw on the outside, instead of taking the time to find out what was going on inside?

6. How did you respond to the other person? How did you respond on the inside?

7. How does it affect you to know God sees inside you and knows your motives?

MAKE IT REAL: YOUR NEXT STEP

Character is who you are when no one is watching.

1. How can you bring all parts of you—who you are in front of your parents, who you are at school or work, who you are with your friends, who you are at church, who you are when you’re alone—into alignment? In other words what can you do to remove your mask and be the same person all the time?

2. Imagine you could give someone a truth serum to make them tell the truth about everything—what motivates them, what they really think, what they really feel. Of all the people in the world, who would you choose to give this serum to?

3. What do you suspect you would find out?

4. Who would you least want to be around if you took a truth serum? Why?

5. Being honest with yourself is hard. What are some ways you can move toward honesty with yourself?

6. Is there one person or a group of people with whom you’ve been acting especially hypocritical lately? What can you do about it this week?

7. How can you have a more sincere relationship with God?

8. What action steps will you take to get this change started?

THIS WEEK: Choose one honest conversation, one surrendered prayer, and one courageous action.
